Pregnancy Massage in Cheltenham

Posted on 16/01/2019

Pregnancy Massage is often provided in a side-laying position

The body goes through so many changes during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy. The lower back arches as the baby bump increases in size and some ladies round their shoulders as their breasts become heavier.

Hormones create many changes to the pregnant body too. They have quite an impact on the emotions, as well as physical characteristics. Progesterone is important in maintaining a pregnancy. It also works alongside Relaxin to relax muscles and other tissues, in order to allow the body space to change and prepare for the birth of the baby. As these hormones cannot single out muscles, e.g. supporting muscles of the expandable pelvis, all muscles are relaxed and do not have the same capacity to contract as muscles do, pre-pregnancy. This contributes to achey, tired muscles that would certainly benefit from a massage. Massage helps to tone muscle, brings new oxygenated blood and nutrients to muscles as well of helps to get rid of waste products hanging around the muscle cells. All of this helps muscles to function much better in their supporting role of maintaining posture, when we sit or stand.

Pregnancy massage does not need to be light and soft. Of course, if this is the client’s preference, this style of massage can be provided. However, a properly trained maternity massage practitioner can offer a range of techniques and increase pressure to the areas that require a little more manipulation. With training, a massage practitioner will show a good understanding of how the body changes in pregnancy and how massage can help a person to feel more comfortable, from the first trimester to the third trimester.

At Cheltenham Reflexology and Massage all of our therapists have additional pregnancy massage training. This means that we understand how important it is for you to be comfortable during a massage and have a range of positions that we can work with you. The majority of our pregnant clients lay on their side to receive back, neck and shoulder massage and sometimes moves into a semi-reclined position for leg and arm massage.

We see massage as a way to improve well-being, rather than just a treat. t Cheltenham Reflexology and Massage we always aim for our pregnant clients to leave us feeling so much better than when they arrived and to have an amazing night’s sleep that day too.
