Reflexology

Reflexology Cheltenham

Reflexology is a relaxing and balancing treatment that is suitable for all ages. The youngest person that we have provided reflexology for was only 4 days old and the oldest has been in their 80’s.

The treatment begins with a lovely foot massage. This is relaxing for the client and also provides the therapist with an opportunity to feel the feet to locate areas of tension and imbalance.

After this, the reflexologist uses a thumb-walking technique to press areas of the feet in order to stimulate nerves in the skin. There are 7000 nerve endings on the feet and by pressing on these, nerves signals are sent all around the body.

Reflexology is based on the theory that reflex areas of the feet correspond to different parts of the body. For instance, the big toe is linked to your head. It may seem strange, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence showing that working on the nerve pathways on the feet can help with everyday troubles, like headaches, back pain, stress, hormonal imbalances and much more.

Our reflexology style at Cheltenham Reflexology and Massage is clinical. We are serious about the treatments we offer and work hard to understand your needs. We then devise a treatment plan and work on reflex areas that we think are best for you, as an individual. Every treatment will be a little different from the last, depending on your wellbeing in the moment.

A professional reflexologist is not able to state that they can cure or diagnose. We know reflexology can be helpful to many people and with a huge variety of conditions, including:

  • Fertility issues
  • Symptoms of stress
  • Migraines
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Sleep problems
  • Aches and pains
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Digestion issues
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Oedema

And much more

We believe that Reflexology is extremely beneficial in pregnancy. Pregnancy can be a very happy time. For some people, there are some unwanted symptoms, as the body goes through many changes. We have treated pregnant ladies who have found that reflexology had a positive effect on:

  • Nausea and sickness
  • Sleep problems
  • Back ache
  • Symphysis pubis dysfunction
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Leg cramp
  • Aches and pains
  • Swelling in the feet and hands

You will discuss any of the above symptoms when you come in for your treatment – your therapist will ask what you would like to get out of the treatment and will be able to discuss this with you in depth.

Conceiving a baby is often referred to as the ‘most natural thing in the world’, but it does not work out for everyone, within the timeframe that we expect.

People often ask us how reflexology can help when a couple is trying to conceive? The best explanation is that we aim for human body to become a ‘constant internal environment’. Hormonal levels play a huge role in the body, and of course, in conception. Reflexology helps to balance out hormones by working on the body as a whole. If you are stressed, your hormones change a great deal, with raised cortisol (stress hormone). We also use reflexology to aid the reduction of stress levels and to help the body to be in a balanced state.

It’s not just people who are struggling to conceive that we see at Cheltenham Reflexology and Massage. We have seen an increase in the number of ladies seeking reflexology treatment in order to ‘prepare their body’ for when they will start trying to conceive.

We love the opportunity to work with ladies and men, especially when is comes to conception. A man’s general health is of course hugely influential on the quality of sperm.

We use a gentle touch form of reflexology when working with babies and children. Treatments vary in length, depending on the age of the child. We have found that parents have sought out reflexology to help with:

  • Baby’s sleep
  • Colic
  • Digestive issues

Reflexology Lymphatic drainage (RLD)

Sally Kay, a lovely Reflexologist from Wales, pioneered RLD, through her university research project. She devised a protocol (sequence of reflex movements) that focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes in the feet (or hands) and this in turn has been proven to have an effect on the lymphatic system in the body.

Sally’s research uses scientific processes to collect data, resulting in evidence that reflexology does improve lymphatic function. Limbs are measured before and after treatment and a reduction in circumference has been noted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyL7X4Nvbcs

Kerry uses RLD techniques for clients with oedema, clients with lymphedema and post surgery, especially involving the removal of lymph nodes. Kerry has seen clients who have a collection of fluid around their ankles or lower legs and seen a marked reduction through the use of lymphatic reflexology. Kerry has also used these techniques for ladies struggling with non-medical swelling during pregnancy.
