ScarWork is an additional service that Kerry trained in in 2020. Training included 5 days of face-to-face instruction, online discussions and case study work.
ScarWork treatment is used to improve the health and feel of scars from surgery or accidents. ScarWork consists of light techniques that work around and directly on the scar tissue. After treatment, clients often comment their scars feel softer, mobility has improved and they feel less pain. Improvement after treatment seems to be lasting and even single sessions can be helpful. Generally a series of treatments is most effective, delivered as part of a physical therapy and rehabilitation program.
We know that scar tissue is fibrous and harder than ‘normal healthy tissue’. Fascia (connective tissue under the skin) surrounds all organs and connects all our body systems, including bones, nerves and blood vessels. This tissue is adversely affected by inflammation and scar tissue caused by surgery or trauma and the result of this is pain and lack of mobility. Scar tissue can also lead to adhesions, whereby inner tissue sticks one area to another.
ScarWork can aid mobility and help to breakdown adhesions, creating increased movement and comfort. This benefits both the direct area around the scar, as well as distant areas of the body that the affected fascia has affected.
